Pool parties, drink recipes, backyard barbecues and weekend trips up to the lake have exhausted your schedule. Are you bored yet?
After all, there comes a time when hot-dogs, hamburgers and warm beer get tired. Of course, if you read my barbecue guide, you would know that you could do a lot more on the grill than just ground chuck and tube steak. But I digress.
My aim here is to address the warm beer. Now cold beer is great on a hot summer afternoon. The problem is that beer is heavy and renders you listless. If you like to laze around and bake in the sun with a 40-ouncer in your belly, then knock yourself out. Literally. Don't get me wrong, I love beer, but at a wicked backyard pool party with a slew of hot women available, the last thing I want is to feel sluggish.
Which brings me to my next point: how many women do you know that love to pound beer? More often than not, the fairer sex has a taste for the light and sweet drink recipes. And to be honest, I'm not so sure I want a woman with a beer gut.
So if you want that cute honey by the pool to get loose and let her hair down, forget beer. Hand her something refreshing where the alcohol is understated, but can still have the desired effect. The simple truth is that you can pack a lot more punch into your summer fun with -- you got it -- punch.
sparkling pineapple punch
I served this incredible punch at a pool party once and after a few glasses, four girls formed a limbo line in tune to some hot soca music. I could have sworn I was at Carnival in Trinidad! It was wild.
Here's what you'll need:
½ cup sugar
½ cup filtered water
2 three-inch cinnamon sticks
1 46-oz. can of pineapple juice, chilled
32 oz. sparkling water, chilled
2 bottles champagne or sparkling white wine
Bring sugar, water and cinnamon to a boil over the stove; reduce heat. Then, cover and simmer the contents over the stove for 15 minutes. Keep the contents covered and refrigerate them for at least 2 hours or until chilled. Remove the cinnamon sticks from syrup. Just before serving, mix the syrup with the remaining ingredients in the punch bowl.
Makes 13 cups.
planter's punch
A classic summer drink, this punch has many variations. The recipe here is the best I have ever tasted. The secret is in one special ingredient: Angostura. Named after the Venezuelan town where it originated, Angostura is an aromatic blend of herbs and spices. The savvy bartender uses it in Manhattan or Pink Lady cocktails. I like it for the flavor, even in a simple glass of ginger ale.
Here's what you'll need:
3 oz. gin, vodka or scotch
1½ oz. syrup (mix 2 pounds sugar with 1½ cups water and use as needed)
¾ oz. cherry juice
1½ oz. lime juice (squeeze 12 fresh limes)
1 generous dash of Angostura bitters
4 cups ice cubes
Put all ingredients into a blender and blend for 3 to 4 minutes. Pour the contents into tall glasses. As a garnish, feel free to add a slice of banana and orange, a cherry, and fresh mint to each. Or, if you like, just down it right out of the blender.
piña colada
A piña colada is a standard and classic summer drink, correct? Maybe, but not my version. I guarantee that this piña colada will turn up the heat and take your party to another level.
Here's what you'll need:
4 chunks ripe pineapple
1 oz. coconut cream
3 tbsp. sugar
½ oz. milk
½ oz. apricot brandy
1 oz. coconut rum
1 oz. dark rum
Blend the ingredients with crushed ice until frozen. Watch out, men: women go insane for this summer drink. Trust me, I have stories.
iced coffee with panache
I love coffee, but come summertime, the last thing I want, besides warm beer in the sun, is a hot cup of joe. But you can have it all -- and a serious kick -- with the following recipe.
Here's what you'll need:
8 oz. strong coffee, chilled (dark roast is best)
½ oz. hazelnut liqueur
1 oz. coffee liqueur
1 cup coffee cream
2 scoops mocha ice cream
Blend the ingredients together until they become smooth, and serve. This is the perfect summer evening drink. On a rooftop under the stars with a group of friends, it doesn't get any better than this. Just make sure you have a designated driver.
white sangria
I went to Spain one summer and had the best sangria of my life in a small restaurant by the coast in San Sebastian. The owner refused to give me the recipe but I convinced his hot niece, who was a waitress at my table, to let me in on the family secret. Her command of the English language was weak at best, but she had other charms. So while not an exact replica, this version is just as good. I recommend you make a lot of it; people can never seem to get enough.
Here's what you'll need:
½ cup apricot brandy
½ cup peach-flavored liqueur
½ cup cognac
½ cup sugar
5 oranges, sliced into rounds
3 peaches, sliced
5 bottles dry white wine, chilled
1 bottle sparkling water or ginger ale, chilled
In a pitcher or punch bowl, combine the ingredients and chill for at least two hours. Serve and get the party started. This sangria packs a wallop, so beware. Things could get rowdy. Yee-haw!
slurring in no time
Now that you have several excellent alcoholic drink recipes to spice up your summer fun, there are no more excuses. Get out there and organize a party. Mix up a batch of your favorites and let the debauchery begin!
