Redefining relations

Men and women have co-existed since the beginning of their creation. Living, seeing, breathing and interacting is a significant factor in the relationships they build with one another. Early in society, the ideology of male and female roles was given. Men were given the role to work and secure income for the family, while women established an orderly household. Creating a misconception of these subjected roles would backlash society's equality for both genders, particularly women. However, the difference in male and female relations today versus centuries ago manipulates the conception of so-called innate roles men and women were issued to play. With major changes in the workforce, education, including the home front, men and women are redefining their relations to benefit each other in this emergent society.
Collectively, the identity of men and women in most societies is very close, although some aspects are carried out differently in certain cultures. Nonetheless, for centuries, society has defined the worth of a woman less to that of a man. In 1980, the United Nations summed up the burden of inequality: "Women, who comprise half the world's population, do two thirds of the world's work, earn one tenth of the world's income and own one hundredth of the world's property (Gender and Society)." Even in early teachings of religion, The Bible clearly states the worth of men greater compared to the worth of women. In Leviticus, God told Moses that a man is worth fifty sheikels and a woman is worth thirty sheikels. Coincidentally, this is roughly the current salary differentials of the sexes, in the United States, today (Gender and Society). Although these statistics still stand, there is a turning point in redefining gender roles and the relations that men and women share with one another. Male and female relations depend on the balance of fairness and amount of respect given to either party. As society moves forward, there are indications in this growth of a greater and more equal relationship that both genders share together.
Male and Female relations have also changed in the workplace. Once, the workplace was a place of noticeable dictatorship and domination by men. Early in society, a woman's job was to take care of the children, as the men would be the bread winners of the family. The female gender gave status of how much power women they had within the family. In effect to this, women were hardly ever seen in the corporate ladder. Since gender is one of the universal dimensions on which status differences are based, society took initiative to give men greater opportunities by employing them with better jobs while women were given jobs that placed them under the submission and rulings of men, such as being a secretary or a nurse. Back then, women on average, made fifty-nine cents to every dollar earned by men (Katz/Monk 127). Imagine working an extra thirteen weeks a year just to make an equivalent to a man's salary. According to recent income reports, women in the United States have to do just that to make as much as men (Gender in Society). Today, women earn an average of seventy-five cents for every dollar men make, according to the US Census Bureau. Although it is evident that some women are yet to receive equal opportunity and pay as men, the situation is improving since the Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963. The relations between male and females in the workplace have completely altered. There are many business corporations today that prohibit gender based hiring process. Since then, the number of women in the workforce have doubled between 1970 and 1997 and it is expected that 61.4 percent of women will be in the labor force by 2006, which shows that women are no longer subordinate to men in finding a career that is elsewhere from the home front (Women and the Law). In effect to women working, a growing number of men are found to take on the role of nurturing and taking care of their children at home. This society continually grows farther from becoming subjective to the genders roles that men and women used to play many centuries ago. The workplace no longer belongs to one gender, but both men and women are able to share the same roles and receive equal respect.
In the history of education, women were not allowed to further their education in college. Rather, they were to set to be wedded to a wealthy man and have as many children as the man wished. However, women soon realized that no one was able to hold them back from the right to an education and the right to have a piece of mind. Many do not realize the history of women's achievements, but there are many scholarly women that had set a path entailing their intelligence. A great example of women's achievements in this society's education is Maria Gaetana Agnesi, who was a brilliant mathematician circa early 1700s (Butler 39). Her solutions for algebraic expressions are still in math textbooks, today. For centuries, gender inequality in education has fixated into a practice that women no longer find obligated to comply to. Rather, education has empowered women to create a world of opportunities for their lives as well as to prove to society, themselves, and men, that intelligence should not be based on gender and with held from any human being. Looking at education today, relations have strengthened between men and women by working and learning with each other in all educational institutions.
Undoubtedly, men and women have gone nearly full circle in their relations with one another. There was a time where the balance of respect and roles never existed between the two, but today, men and women are truly redefining themselves and their relationships with each other. Most importantly, women have broken from the bondage of dependence on men. Women no longer have to submit themselves to one main role in family life as the mother. Along with being the mother, women have become the educated breadwinners. As for men, the need for dominancy has changed dramatically because today, men have been found to be the nurturing stay-at-home fathers of their family. Male and female relation is not entirely a dispute on inequality that women received from society, although that is what propels finding equality between the two genders. Rather, male and female relation resolute this emergent society to work together as a unit.
